What is Gutenberg?

Back to: WordPress 101 Table of Contents

In this video, you’ll learn how to create media-rich, custom layouts using the all-new Block Editor introduced in WordPress 5.0, nicknamed, “Gutenberg.”

In WordPress 5.0, the entire editing experience has been completely rebuilt to add new tools that enable you to create just about any type of layout you can imagine.

The new editor, nicknamed, “Gutenberg,” introduces a new tool to WordPress called Blocks. With Blocks, you can insert, rearrange, and style all types of content without having to learn how to code. Simply add a new block to your page or post, and then focus on creating your content.

The new block-based editor won’t change the way your content looks to your visitors. What it will do is let you insert different kinds of media, in any order, and then rearrange your content however you like. Each piece of content is contained within its own block; which makes it easy to edit, change styles, and build your own custom layouts — LEGO style — without being an expert developer or designer.

By default, Gutenberg includes over a dozen different blocks, that represent the types of content you’ll likely need the most. But there are also hundreds more blocks being created by third-party developers every day. Right out of the box, Gutenberg includes text blocks like Paragraphs, Headings, Subheadings, and Quotes. And you can add multimedia, like Images, Photo Galleries, large, full-width Cover Images, and Video or Audio files. But you can also create custom layouts with multiple Columns, add Code Snippets, bulleted or numbered Lists, Buttons, and more.

In the next several videos, you’ll become familiar with the new Editor, and each of the Blocks. But simply put, this new block-based editor opens up all kinds of possibilities that simply weren’t available like this before.
